Cubs Sign Billy Hamilton to Minor League Deal

The Cubs have signed Billy Hamilton to a minor league contract, according to the team’s transaction log.

In case you think you’re misreading something, you’re not. Hamilton is the speedster who stole 230 bases over the span of four seasons. He hasn’t played in a major league game since 2023, when he took two at-bats for the Chicago White Sox. He also appeared in 14 games for the Cubs in 2020, collecting three hits in 10 at-bats.

The outfielder has played in Mexico since 2024, continuing to be a threat on the bases. However, his offense remains nearly nonexistent. Because he was signed on August 31, he is eligible to be on the playoff roster when October arrives. Although he offers little at the plate, there’s a possibility the Cubs will add him as a pinch-runner for late-game situations.
