Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/24/26): Yankees 8, Cubs 3 – Bregman Homers in Spring Training Finale
The Cubs finally wrapped up their spring training schedule with a matchup against the Yankees at Sloan Park Tuesday afternoon. Manager Craig Counsell had a quick hook on his starters in this one, pulling most of them before the 3rd inning in what would be a lopsided loss.
Alex Bregman gave Chicago the lead in his only at bat of the day with a solo home run against a rehabbing Gerrit Cole in the bottom of the 1st. Edward Cabrera had a bit of a struggle on the mound, giving up five runs in 4.1 innings and giving up solo shots by Ben Rice, Jasson Domínguez, and Randal Grichuk to make it 5-1 in the 5th.
Miguel Amaya cut the North Siders’ deficit to 5-2 with his own home run in the bottom of the frame, but it was not enough as New York was eventually victorious 8-3. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Yankees’ pair of home runs in the 4th inning put them ahead 4-1 and the Cubs never got that close again.
Why the Cubs Lost
The starting pitcher struggled and the bats were pretty quiet once the veterans came out.
Stats That Matter
- Cabrera finished the spring with a couple of clunkers after a very good beginning.
- Bregman hit three homers in three games after returning from the WBC.
- Amaya had a good spring and started to incorporate more power at the end.
Bottom Line
Spring training is over and the Cubs did not suffer any major injuries, which automatically makes it a success. Any other results don’t matter at all once the real games start on Thursday. The Cubs look like they are very talented on paper, and now they have a chance to back up that hype.
On Deck
The regular season begins Thursday against the Nationals at Wrigley Field starting at 1:20pm CT. Matthew Boyd makes the start for the Cubs against Cade Cavalli in a game airing on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
