Cubs Reinstate Maton, Option Barnes

It had already been announced that Phil Maton was going to be activated for the Padres series, so let’s just roll with the media release on this one.

The Chicago Cubs today reinstated right-handed pitcher Phil Maton from the 15-day injured list. In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Maton, 33, was placed on the injured list on April 8 with right knee tendinitis. Before his stint on the IL, the righty appeared in five games with the Cubs and pitched to a 13.50 ERA (6 ER/4.0 IP) with five strikeouts and four walks. He made one rehab outing with Iowa, throwing 1.0 scoreless inning, surrendering two hits and striking out two batters. Maton signed a two-year contract with the Cubs on February 22.

The Paducah, Ky., native is 23-21 with 10 saves, a 4.06 ERA (215 ER/476.1 IP), 544 strikeouts, compared to 187 walks, and a 1.27 WHIP in 483 career major league games across 10 seasons with San Diego (2017-19), Cleveland (2019-21), Houston (2021-23), Tampa Bay (2024), the Mets (2024), St. Louis (2025), and Texas (2025).

Barnes, 30, was recalled yesterday ahead of the game against the Dodgers and did not pitch.

The Cubs play the San Diego Padres tonight at 6:40 p.m. PT at Petco Park. The game can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 104.3 the Score.
