Cubs Injury Updates: Boyd Throwing Bullpen Tuesday, Steele Resuming Throwing Program, Taillon Working with Plyos
The Cubs announced some semi-positive news regarding a trio of injured starters on Monday, though it may be a while before we have any definitive information. Matthew Boyd, whose return from meniscus surgery was pushed back by shoulder soreness, is set to throw an up-down bullpen on Tuesday. Provided he bounces back well from that, the Cubs will lay out his next steps.
Justin Steele is heading back to Chicago this week to spend time with the team as he ramps back up following his own setback. He’s been throwing plyos and will continue to do so for another week before stepping up to an actual baseball. The hope is that he’ll be ready for game action at some point in the second half, but that all depends on how this latest buildup goes.
Finally, Jameson Taillon has begun throwing plyos as he rehabs his injured hamstring. He’s not expected back until after the All-Star break, so this is just a matter of keeping his arm active while he recovers. Even though he was looking a little washed this season, the Cubs desperately need competent depth. Perhaps they will kick the tires on Drew Pomeranz, who was just designated for assignment by the Angels. Lord knows they’ve made plenty of other pitching moves over the last few weeks.
