Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/24/26, Game 1): Cubs 10, Mets 3 – Swanson’s 7 RBI Key Blowout

The Cubs offense went off again in the first half of a day-night doubleheader at Citi Field against the Mets on Wednesday afternoon. The hero for a second consecutive game was Dansby Swanson, who made the entire difference with a pair of home runs.

New York struck first against Javier Assad with back-to-back homers in the bottom of the 4th inning. Old friend Jared Young had a two-run shot, and Francisco Alvarez followed with a solo dinger to make it 3-0.

Chicago responded with three of their own against Mets starter Nolan McLean to tie the score in the top of the 5th. Michael Conforto had an RBI double, then Michael Busch walloped a two-run homer off the second deck in right.

Swanson gave the North Siders the lead with a three-run homer in the top of the 6th to make it 6-3. The suddenly red-hot shortstop put some icing on the cake when he blasted a grand slam off of reliever Jonathan Pintaro that increased the advantage to 10-3 in the 8th. That would end up being the final margin, as New York went quietly from there. (Box score)

Key Moment

Swanson’s go-ahead homer came with two outs and runners on first and third. He got a mistake in the middle of the plate from a tiring McLean, and he did not miss it.

Why the Cubs Won

They hit three home runs with runners on base.

Stats That Matter

  • Assad was not sharp but did a good job limiting damage: 5 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 5 K, and 2 BB.
  • Swanson has three home runs and 11 RBI the past two games.
  • Busch got on base three times.

Bottom Line

With the pitching staff completely ravaged with injuries, the Cubs’ offensive surge is going to need to continue going forward if they want to win some games. If players like Swanson can catch fire, they might just be able to do it.

On Deck

The nightcap of the doubleheader starts at 6:10pm CT. Shōta Imanaga goes up against fellow lefty Sean Manaea in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with a radio broadcast on The Score.
