Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/24/26): Cubs 4, Mets 3 F/10 – Boyd Returns as Cubs Complete Season Sweep of Mets

The Cubs completed a four-game sweep of the Mets at Citi Field Thursday night. This was a much closer contest that required extra innings before the road squad emerged victorious in the 10th inning, but the end result was the same as every other game between these two teams this season.

Matthew Boyd made his return from a knee injury and pitched pretty well, keeping New York off the scoreboard over 4.2 innings. Chicago took advantage of yet another error to move ahead with three runs against Freddy Peralta in the top of the 6th inning.

Michael Conforto singled home Dansby Swanson, and Alex Bregman doubled to bring Conforto in. Bregman took third when the right fielder bobbled the ball, then scored on an Ian Happ RBI single. The North Siders gave two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Eric Wagaman homered off of Hoby Milner to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Mets tied the game when Jared Young blasted a solo shot against Phil Maton in the bottom of the 7th. The home team had a couple of good scoring chances in the next two innings, but failed to capitalize and things headed to extras.

Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled off of Brooks Raley to bring home the Cubs’ free runner in the top of the 10th. Trent Thornton came on in the bottom of the frame and retired all three New York hitters to earn the save in the 4-3 win. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Mets had two on with one out in the bottom of the 9th, but Jacob Webb escaped the jam to get the game to extra innings.

Why the Cubs Won

The makeshift bullpen held up just enough to give their team the win.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd had pretty good stuff and wriggled out of a couple tough spots: 4.2 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 K, and 4 BB.
  • PCA stayed hot with two more hits, including the game-winner.

Bottom Line

The Cubs definitely have the Mets’ number this season with a clean sweep of the season set. They are finding ways to win games; it’s definitely not pretty, but that doesn’t matter as long as they still go down in the victory column. More consistent success will give the front office a chance to make a couple of trades and maybe stabilize the pitching staff a bit.

On Deck

Chicago heads to Wrigley North for a series against the Brewers beginning Friday at 6:45pm CT. Colin Rea takes on Jacob Misiorowski in a contest available exclusively on Apple TV+ with a radio feed on The Score.
