Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/27/26): Cubs 7, Cardinals 3 – Big Nights for Hoerner, Bregman in 60th Win

The Cubs and Cardinals had to endure a 106-minute rain delay before getting their series underway at Busch Stadium on Monday night. It turned out to be worth the wait for the road team, as they went on to win thanks to a couple of four-hit performances.

Chicago took the lead against starter Matthew Liberatore in the top of the 1st when Alex Bregman hit an RBI double. They added another the following inning on a run-scoring single off the bat of Miguel Amaya that made it 2-0.

St. Louis cut the deficit in half when José Fermin hit a solo shot off of David Peterson in the bottom of the frame. The North Siders came right back with a solo homer from Bregman to bring the margin to 3-1 in the 3rd.

Nico Hoerner increased the Cubs’ advantage to 5-1 with a two-run single against Hunter Dobbins in the top of the 5th. Peterson made it two outs into the 6th before he was replaced by Gavin Hollowell, who gave up a pair on a single by Masyn Winn and a double by Bryan Torres that drew the Cardinals within 5-3.

Hoerner provided some extra breathing room for closer Jacob Webb when he hit a two-run homer off of Dobbins in the 9th. Webb finished off the bottom of the frame and Chicago was victorious 7-3. (Box score)

Key Moment

Ian Happ made a perfect throw into second base to cut down Iván Herrera trying to extend a single into a double to begin the bottom of the 8th. It would have brought the tying run to the plate in a 5-3 game, but the inning ended soon after instead.

Why the Cubs Won

A decent effort from their starting pitcher and lots of hard contact throughout the game was the winning formula.

Stats That Matter

• Peterson has been pretty decent the past three starts: 5.2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 3 K, and 2 BB.
• Hoerner is really heating up with four hits and four RBI.
• Also a huge night for Bregman with a homer, two doubles, and a single.

Bottom Line

Winning the first game at the house of horrors that is Busch Stadium is always a nice boost for the Cubs. If either Bregman or Hoerner can go on an extended run at the plate, it will be huge for this team. Getting them both hot at the same time would make the offense very hard to stop.
