Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/28/26): Cubs 10, Cardinals 2 – Early Offensive Outburst Buries Birds
The Cubs ambushed the Cardinals and starter Michael McGreevy at Busch Stadium Tuesday night. The road squad put up seven runs in the first two innings to knock the young pitcher out of the game and they never looked back, winning easily.
Ian Happ got the scoring started with a two-run double in the top of the 1st that made it 2-0. Chicago blew the game wide open with a five-spot in the 2nd, beginning with a sacrifice fly by Pete Crow-Armstrong. Seiya Suzuki doubled, Michael Busch had an RBI single, and Nico Hoerner knocked in two more with a hit to make the score 7-0 Cubs.
That was more than enough support for Colin Rea, who went six innings with just a single run allowed. The North Siders kept adding on with RBI singles by Pedro Ramirez, Suzuki, and Carson Kelly to increase the margin to 10-1.
St. Louis scored an additional tally in the bottom of the 9th, but it was purely cosmetic as the Cubs prevailed 10-2. (Box score)

Chicago put the game out of reach with the big 2nd inning and got into the St. Louis bullpen early, forcing them to use a lot of arms.

A whole lot of run support and a solid starting pitching performance were more than enough Tuesday.

- Rea was very sharp working with the big cushion: 6 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 K, and 2 BB.
- Suzuki collected three hits.
- Alex Bregman also had three hits and has seven in the series.
- Ramirez had two infield singles and a ringing double.
Bottom Line
The Cubs really did a number on the Cardinals’ most effective starter this season. Now that they are starting to regress towards average numbers with runners in scoring position, they are beginning to score in bunches. With a little pitching help at the deadline, they could really make some noise over the rest of the season.
