Dansby Swanson Could Miss 4-6 Weeks with Grade 2 Oblique Strain
Dansby Swanson was in obvious discomfort following a swing and miss during the 3rd inning of Sunday’s loss, and the initial thought was that he’d suffered an oblique injury. The Cubs were proactive in saying he’d go on the IL, which is not a very familiar place for the shortstop, even before having imaging done. While Craig Counsell has yet to announce anything, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported that it’s a Grade 2 strain that typically requires 4-6 weeks of recovery.
Even being on the long end of that timeline would have Swanson ready for the start of the postseason, albeit without any opportunity for rehab work in the minors. If he’s ready on the short end, the Iowa Cubs play until September 20. The Knoxville Smokies wrap up in mid-September, and the South Bend Cubs are done with their regular season on September 6.
This is a big loss for the best defense in all the land, but it helps to have Nico Hoerner there to handle short in the meantime. Pedro Ramírez, who’s seen time at multiple infield spots since establishing himself in Chicago, figures to get most of the reps at second for the next few weeks.
More to come once the move is made official and the Cubs call up a replacement.
