Chicago Cubs @ Milwaukee Brewers – Series Preview (September 7-9): Overview, Game and Broadcast Info, Starting Pitchers, W2W4
The Cubs (81-63) took two of three from the Marlins in Miami over the weekend for their first series victory in over two weeks. Now they turn right back around for three against the Brewers in Wisconsin to wrap up the season series against their rivals to the north.
Milwaukee (88-56) dropped two of three to the Reds in Cincinnati after splitting four games at Wrigley Field. It was an uncharacteristically bad performance by the pitching staff, which allowed 24 runs in the three-game set at Great American Ball Park.
Jackson Chourio remains the most dangerous hitter for the Brew Crew out of the leadoff spot, and William Contreras also did significant damage against Chicago in the recent matchup. Despite his season-long struggles, Christian Yelich hit an important home run at Wrigley last Tuesday.
The Cubs were surprisingly effective facing the Milwaukee starting rotation last week, including putting five on Cy Young frontrunner Jacob Misiorowski. It was a much different story against the bullpen, as Craig Counsell‘s squad could do almost nothing the entire series.
While this matchup has lost some of its juice with the Brewers up seven games with just 18 to go, there is still a very good chance these two teams will meet in the postseason. This is an opportunity for the North Siders to prepare for that possibility, and they also need to keep winning to make sure they get to the playoffs at all. Let’s see if they can get a bit of a psychological edge with a couple wins at Wrigley North.
