Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/9/26): Brewers 8, Cubs 6 – 9th Inning Comeback Falls Short as Brewers Sweep
The Brewers made quick work of the Cubs to complete a sweep on Wednesday night. Kevin Gausman got lit up in the first few innings to put his team in a hole they couldn’t pull it out of, despite a big 9th inning rally, and the panic level is rising on the North Side.
Milwaukee began the scoring with a three-run homer by Christian Yelich in the bottom of the 1st inning. Gausman surrendered three more in the 2nd on dingers from Jackson Chourio (solo) and William Contreras (two-run) that put Chicago behind 6-0.
The North Siders could not generate much of anything against Logan Henderson, only scoring on a Michael Busch groundout in the top of the 4th. The Brew Crew drove home two more runs on RBI singles by Chourio and Contreras for an 8-1 edge.
The Cubs made a push in the top of the 9th, scoring five runs and bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Michael Conforto had a two-run double to make it 8-6, but the Brewers slammed the door to finish off the victory. (Box score)

After a pair of tough losses, immediately giving up three in the opening inning was very demoralizing.

They got buried by a bad starting pitching effort and the offense didn’t get going until the very end of the game.

Bottom Line
Things are starting to get pretty dicey for the Cubs, who now own a four-game losing streak. The Padres won to move within 2.5 games, and the Diamondbacks are only three games behind after a loss on Wednesday. Chicago has basically given away any margin of error they had a month ago. They badly need to win the next series or the spiral may get out of control.
