Alex Bregman Describes Injury, Expresses Desire to Hit in Wednesday’s Game

Alex Bregman addressed media members in the locker room prior to Wednesday’s game against the Marlins, detailing the extent of his injuries and expressing a desire to get back as quickly as possible. A day after tracking pitches against the Trajekt machine, he said his goal is to take some at-bats to prepare for a possible plate appearance in the second game of the series.

The trick might be finding a helmet that offers protection without being uncomfortable, as the swelling in Bregman’s face is still quite noticeable. It’s much improved from yesterday, which he explained has actually increased his discomfort. Vinny Duber of the Sun-Times was among those in the scrum, and you can see his video of the conversation below.

“Pain’s been fine, though; I guess I just fractured something right by the nerve in my face,” Bregman said. “So the left side of my face has been a little bit numb. As soon as the swelling goes down, I’m sure I’ll feel the breaks a little bit more.”

Had the ball struck just a little higher, Bregman might have been dealing with at least temporary vision impairment. He’s seeing fine for now, but he said the residual fluid makes it feel like his whole face is moving when he runs. That makes playing the field impossible for the time being.

“It felt like I got hit with a baseball bat to the face,” Alex Bregman said of taking a foul ball to his face Sunday.

“I hope so,” he said when asked about playing this weekend in Boston. “We’ll see. One step at a time, but I’m going to try to get in there tonight.”
