Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/25/26: GM 2): Red Sox 2, Cubs 0 – Offensive Deep Freeze Continues in Doubleheader Sweep
The Cubs’ offensive malaise continued as they were blanked by the Red Sox to complete a doubleheader sweep at Fenway Park Friday. Another great pitching performance was wasted and frustration is mounting with the playoffs approaching.
Starting pitchers David Peterson and Brayan Bello did very well, and there was no score through the first five innings. The bullpens were equally effective, with Javier Assad and Jedixson Paez maintaining the shutout into the 8th.
Assad came out of the game with a man on first and one out in the bottom of the 8th. Ryan Rolison took over and, after a strikeout and a walk, Wilyer Abreu banged a go-ahead two-run double off the Green Monster to give Boston a 2-0 lead.
Chicago went quietly, with Paez going the final five innings and finishing off the whitewashing. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs had no extra-base hits and only got a runner to third base one time in the game. That opportunity came in the top of the 5th with runners on the corners and Pete Crow-Armstrong grounded out to second to end the threat.

If you can’t score a run, you can’t win a baseball game.
Stats That Matter
- Peterson at least deserves consideration for a playoff start: 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 6 K, and 2 BB.
- Seiya Suzuki got on base three times with two singles and a walk.
- Michael Busch also had a pair of hits.
Bottom Line
The Cubs aren’t just backing into the playoffs, they are almost running away from October. It might not matter once the postseason gets underway, but you would like to have some kind of positive momentum coming out of this last game. If they perform like this in a hostile environment next week, they will be gone in a hurry.
